Jennifer Fitzgerald
She was born a fighter on March 15, 1966. At 9 months, Jennifer survived her first of four open-heart surgeries. Jennifer, or Jenn to her friends, was the second of four daughters of Mike and Kathy Choppin. Growing up in Long Beach, Jennifer defied the odds and lived an active life swimming, sailing and skiing. Few people knew of her heart condition because she had such tremendous energy. Jenn had an indomitable spirit, a passion for life. She laughed easily and often. She loved her family and friends with all her heart. Her early departure reminds us to live life to the fullest by caring for others.
Jenn married Brian Fitzgerald in 1991 and they have 2 beautiful children - Katy is ten and brother Jack is nine years old. Jennifer was an active volunteer at St. Joseph’s parish and school, where Katy is in 5th grade and Jackson is in the 3rd grade.
After graduating from Cal State Long Beach with a degree in Child Development, Jennifer started a corporate childcare and preschool program called Growing Years in downtown Long Beach. Families who enrolled their children in Growing Years knew their children were nurtured and experiencing fun activities every day.
Jenn also created a community of working women who spent time at Growing Years, learning how to better communicate with and care for their children. In 1997, she inspired a group of these women to form Children Today, a non-profit organization whose mission is to enrich the lives of homeless children by providing a nurturing childcare and preschool for those children whose parents needed a second chance. Jennifer was not only the inspiration, but the driving force behind Children Today’s “The Play House.”
Jennifer was a 1999 Graduate of Leadership Long Beach and went on to serve on the board of Leadership Long Beach.
Jennifer’s passion for good food and cooking led to her second career as a Pampered Chef consultant. Her gift for inspiring and leading others created a powerhouse consulting line. Soon she was flying her all over the US to give motivational training speeches for Pampered Chef. More recently she ventured into the financial business world and was a successful reverse mortgage consultant for Wells Fargo Bank, and recently received a Customer Service Award for customer care practices.
