Ruth and Billy
As an unemployed mother, Ruth was unable to pay her rent and lost her apartment. Ruth was forced to take her son, Billy, to an emergency shelter just a few days before his third birthday.

Ruth and Billy came to the Multi-Service Center in search of help. While Ruth worked the Multi-Service Center’s case managers to find a new home and a job, Billy joined us at The Play House. We gave Billy his own backpack with new and nearly new clothes, shoes, books, games and toys.

At first, Billy was shy. He was reluctant to eat. He didn’t talk much, and even when he did, his speech was difficult to understand. However, with the loving support and encouragement of The Play House staff, Billy became more comfortable with his new surroundings. He began participating in activities, playing with other children and eating more at each meal.

We referred Billy to the Multi-Service Center’s Children’s Clinic for health assessment and immunizations. The pediatrician was able to detect a slight hearing problem and referred him for further services at the main clinic. Ruth was relieved to know the source of Billy’s speech problems and became more patient in communicating with him.

While Billy was being cared for at The Play House, Ruth was able to work with the Multi-Service Center’s case managers to find a new home at the Salvation Army Family Center, a new 18-month program in Long Beach. We also helped Ruth find a local Head Start program where Billy could be enrolled immediately due to his newly diagnosed hearing disability.

When Billy left The Play House, we were filled with pride and we feel fortunate to have helped his family on their journey toward stability.
