Children Today is founded by Theresa Bixby and Jennifer Fitzgerald. They galvanized dozens of friends and family to build the agency from conception to reality. Many of those original supporters are still actively involved with the organization today.
2000
The Play House opens. Children Today’s first child care facility opens as part of the Long Beach Multi-Service Center for the Homeless. Children Today also becomes a founding member of the Long Continuum of Care - the safety net for people experiencing homelessness in Long Beach.
2005
Children Today loses Co-Founder, Jennifer Fitzgerald. Jennifer's untimely death from heart failure at just 38 was a profound loss to her family, her countless friends, and the agency she created.
2008
The Play House North opens. Children Today doubles its service capacity by opening a new site in North Long Beach.
2012
Children Today starts serving children experiencing abuse or neglect. After recognizing that children experiencing homelessness and children involved in the child welfare system share similar trauma histories, the board votes to expand our mission and scope of service.
2016
Children Today finds its forever home. After a years-long search, capital campaign, and construction project, Eco House opens it doors. This new facility allows us to combine all of our programs and services into one beautiful space.
2022
Children Today turns 25. Since 2000, Children Today has offered free, trauma informed childcare, preschool, and support services to over 1,100 children from nearly 800 households, and has provided well over 150,000 unduplicated days of service.
