Children Today serves children (ages 6 weeks to 6 years) and families who are experiencing homelessness or who have an open case with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and Department of Social Services due to abuse or neglect. In order to enroll families, we must receive a referral from an appropriate agency or service provider.
Referrals for Families Involved with DCFS Families with an open DCFS case, and/or children already in foster care need a referral from their DCFS Social Worker. The referral must be on Agency Letterhead, must be signed, and must include the information outlined in thistemplate.
Referrals for Families Experiencing Homelessness Families who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence can qualify for services. A written referral from a legal, medical, or social service agency, a local educational agency liaison for homeless children, a Head Start Program, or an emergency or transitional shelter must be on Agency Letterhead, must be signed, and must include the information outlined in this template.
A written parental declaration that the family is homeless and a statement describing the family's current living situation may also be used at enrollment. However, the family will also need to provide additional documentation showing their need for child development services, including: 1) seeking permanent housing; 2) seeking employment; 3) engaging in vocational training; and/or 4) employment.
FAMILY FEES
Services are free of charge for most qualifying families. However, because Children Today is subsidized in part by the California Department of Education, we are required to charge monthly fees if a household's income exceeds a certain threshold. To see if a family fee would apply to your family or client, click on the CDE Family Fee Schedule.
